Beijing asks for local help on migrant management
Adjust font size:

Beijing will invite police forces from some 20 areas and counties in Henan, Yunnan, Anhui and other provinces, where the majority of Beijing's migrant workers come from, to open up offices in migrant-populated communities in the Chinese capital city to offer better services and management for this floating population.

Officials of Beijing's public security bureau said that the city has so far 5.3 million migrant workers, among which 3.6 million are living in the city for the long term. The crime rate of migrant workers remains high on the record, accounting for 70 percent of the total, the Beijing Morning Post, a local media outlet, reported Friday.

The municipal police hoped that with local police forces taking care of migrant workers from their original hometowns it will ease the management work and would be a good try in making up complementary services for this migrant population, the paper said.

According to the latest statistics, theft cases of vehicles in the city has dropped 28.6 percent, while indoor theft rate is down by 16 percentage points during July and October, compared with the same periods last year. There is also an obvious decrease in reporting of major cases.

Officials of the municipal police revealed that they have increased the police force on guard around some 390 key areas across the city, including contracted hotels, hospitals for the upcoming 2008 Olympic Games.

At present, the project is still under preparation and is expected to start around the Spring Festival early next year.
