In the next month and a half, Beijing
residents will be able to enjoy over a hundred concerts, operas and
dance performances by Chinese and foreign musicians. This is the result
of a cultural exchange events series known as "Meet in Beijing",
which began Wednesday night at the Great Hall of the people in Beijing.
The series is expected to show off Beijing's cultural diversity and
bolster its Olympic bid.
????
The Minister of Culture, Sun Jiazheng, unveiled the month-long series
of events. The opening performance featured dozens of young Chinese
dancers and singers who have won awards in international competitions.
These dancers include Fan Xiaofeng and Sun Shenyi from the Shanghai
Ballet Troupe. They performed a selection from the ballet Don Quixote.
????
Operas were also highlighted at Wednesday's show and will continue
to grab headlines over the next month. The series will come to climax
in late May, when the renowned tenor Placido Domingo gives a solo
concert at the Great Hall of the People.
????
Other culture performances include acrobatics, which are very popular
among Chinese audiences. The various kinds of programs are a testament
to Beijing's cultural diversity.
