In most kids' movies, children laugh at certain jokes and adults laugh at others. In Pixar's latest animation blockbuster, Up, everyone seemed to be laughing at once.
Living up to its simple title, directors Pete Docter and Bob Peterson mix drama, comedy and action, creating a wonderful journey out of an airborne house, a bad-tempered pensioner, a whining schoolboy and some talking dogs.
At the center of Up is Carl Fredriksen (voiced by Edward Asner), a retired 78-year-old balloon salesman who finally fulfills his lifelong dream, shared with his deceased wife Ellie, of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: a very optimistic 9-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell.

Up is more than just fun. With intense emotions, the tender narration during the early scenes takes the story back to the young Carl's days. He was enthusiastic about the black-and-white newsreel images of his idol, a world famous aviator and explorer, Charles Muntz. Then, Carl meets Ellie, a brave, likely adventurer who becomes his beloved wife. The director brightly compresses their love story and shared dreams into four silent minutes, during which the couple dream together, face crushing disappointment and grow happily old.
The square headed and round nosed man is not a typical Pixar hero. But when the colorful balloons burst through the top of his wooden house, it's as if a thousand gloriously imaginative thoughts have bloomed into reality.
