Tongling--the Copper Capital of China |
Tongling, which actually became a tourist resort as early as 1,000 years ago, can lay claim to many contemporary tourism resources. Owing to its wealth of copper deposits, Tongling's tradition of copper production can be traced back more than 3,000 years. It was also Tongling where the first furnace of liquid copper and the first copper ingots were produced after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The Ancient Golden Bull Cave Mining Site and the Ancient Wanyingshan Smelting Site, which are key historical monuments under state protection, are particularly well-preserved. These combine to make it possible for Tongling to simultaneously develop tourism while retaining a rich copper culture.
Furthermore, Tongling is rich in animal and plant resources. The peonies of Tongling are equally as famous as the peonies of Luoyang city in Henan province and Heze City in Shandong province; the captive-bred Yangtze freshwater dolphins, extremely rare and precious, are unique to Tongling; and the Tianjing Lake (or Heavenly Well Lake) Scenic Area and the Yongquan Farm are marvelous holiday and tourist resorts.
