Beijing has maintained its position at the top of the "Nature Index Science Cities" ranking for the eighth consecutive year, according to the 2024 report released on Sunday.
The latest data shows that Beijing's research output grew by nearly 9% year on year in 2023.
Four other Chinese cities — Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, and Wuhan —ranked among the global top 10.
"Our annual look at the world's leading cities for research output in Nature Index journals shows China's major urban centers are moving from strength to strength, but they are now also being joined by smaller provincial Chinese cities at the top of the rankings," noted nature.com.
Additionally, the Global Innovation Hubs Index (GIHI) developed by the Center for Industrial Development and Environmental Governance at Tsinghua University and Nature Research ranked Beijing third globally, behind San Francisco–San Jose and New York.
The GIHI, now in its fifth year, evaluates 120 cities across 30 metrics related to science centers, innovation hubs, and innovation ecosystems.
