Xi Jinping was named chairman of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Military Commission on Thursday at the first plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee. Hu Jintao no longer serves as the commission's chairman.
Xi, 59, was elected general secretary of the CPC Central Committee at the first plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee on Thursday. He was appointed vice chairman of the Central Military Commission at the fifth plenary session of the 17th CPC Central Committee in October 2010.
Hu was elected general secretary of the CPC Central Committee at the first plenary session of the 16th CPC Central Committee in 2002. He was named chairman of the Central Military Commission in September 2004.
Also on Thursday, Fan Changlong and Xu Qiliang were named vice chairmen of the CPC Central Military Commission at the first plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee.
Chang Wanquan, Fang Fenghui, Zhang Yang, Zhao Keshi, Zhang Youxia, Wu Shengli, Ma Xiaotian and Wei Fenghe were named members of the Central Military Commission.
