The finale of the Venom trilogy was directed by Kelly Marcel and starred Tom Hardy as Venom, one of Marvel's most complex characters.
Lionsgate's comedy-drama film "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" opened in second place to a debut of 11.1 million dollars. Based on the international bestseller by Barbara Robinson, the film follows six siblings who sneak into church searching for snacks and walk away with the lead roles in the town pageant.
Another newcomer, A24's horror film "Heretic," landed in third with 11 million dollars this weekend.
