Paramount Pictures' horror film "Smile 2" topped the North American box office this weekend with an estimated three-day cume of 23 million U.S. dollars, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
The R-rated film is a sequel to "Smile," which generated 217 million dollars worldwide in ticket sales in 2022. With director Parker Finn returning, the sequel stars Naomi Scott as a pop star who must confront her dark past before her life spirals out of control.
The film has earned an approval rating of 83 percent based on 131 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, and a "B" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.
Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation's animated film "The Wild Robot" remained in second place on its fourth weekend of release with 10.1 million dollars.
Iconic Events' presentation of "Terrifier 3" landed in third with 9.3 million dollars on its second weekend for a North American total of 36.2 million dollars.
