Elton John, a close friend of the late Princess Diana, on Tuesday admitted he got an invitation to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, despite insisting the opposite seconds earlier.
The 63 year-old piano man appeared on Canadian broadcaster CTV during which he talked about his newborn son and his latest projects. CTV personality Marilyn Denis asked if he would attend the wedding in London on April 29.
"As far as I know, I don't have an invitation," John said.
Denis pressed, saying "we heard you had an invitation."
John then pursed his lips and said, "Yeah, we do have an invitation," as the audience applauded.
"I've been trying to be discreet, yeah we got an invitation," John said.
When asked if he and partner David Furnish planned on attending, John added "yeah I think we will."
About 1,900 guests are expected at Westminster Abbey to watch Princess Diana's elder son exchange vows with his long-time girlfriend.
John told Reuters in January that he did not know William well, and he did not expect to attend the wedding. The singer performed at Diana's funeral at the same venue in 1997.
John was in Canada to introduce his newborn son to the family of Furnish, a Canadian-born film producer. Their boy, Zachary, was born with the help of a surrogate mother in California on Christmas Day.
"This is the first country he's visited," he said.
John said that he did not want to have a child until two years ago, when he made a failed attempt to adopt an HIV-positive boy from Ukraine. "You never know what's going to happen in your life," John said.
"I've been married to a woman, I've been married to a man, I've got a kid, you know the sex change will happen at 85, who knows," he joked.
