Ever since 3D blockbuster Avatar (2009) made over $182 million at the Chinese box office, 3D has been a hot topic in the local film industry. A 3D forum last weekend attracted local directors and overseas filmmakers, discussing the latest trends in the genre.
As part of the 5th China Beijing International Cultural and Creative Industry Expo, the forum raised the question of whether 3D is an opportunity or dead end for the Chinese film industry, with the aim to find out why local 3D is lagging behind Hollywood and how it can catch up.
"In America, there are at least three to five 3D films showing in cinemas all of the time. 3D gaming, 3D sports broadcasting, 3D concerts and many others forms are all extremely popular abroad," commented Bai Qiang, founder and CEO of forum organizer 3D China.
"We can't see too much reaction in China, because many believe 3D is not suitable for China - China should play it safe, be down to earth with the old ways. It's true that not everything needs to be in 3D, but no one can stop 3D's development," Bai explained. "Even DreamWorks said 3D couldn't be done by one or two companies. China can do 3D well if we realize the benefits it will bring us all."
